How can the Wise Wanderings system help

your students and your institution?

  • Do you find yourself struggling to identify the “relevance” of your core or distribution courses to your constituents?
  • Do your students and parents have an increasingly customer-service orientation toward your school and their education?
  • Are you confronted with a bottom-line mentality about education demanding value and outcome?
  • Are your faculty frustrated by the constant encroachment of vocational issues into the curriculum?
  • Do you have to convince your constituents that your graduates will be competitive in the job market?

Then the Wise Wanderings system will be especially valuable

to you and your institution.

At a time when liberal arts administrators and faculty face increasingly challenging questions of accountability and value of the liberal arts degree from parents, accrediting associations, and external reviewers such as U.S. News & World Report, You Majored in What? makes the case for liberal arts as the degree of the 21st century.

How does the Wise Wanderings system work?

Far from pushing aside a liberal arts education, the Wise Wanderings system from the book You Majored in What? Mapping Your Path from Chaos to Career extols the virtues and values of studying everything from economic theory to the Yanomamo tribe to 18th century composers. You Majored in What? and the Wise Wanderings system can be easily adapted to the classroom as a textbook for all students from first-year to seniors. It can be adapted for general use among all majors, or presented in a class specifically designed for one major. It will empower your students with the strength and value of a liberal arts education, develop their mindsets and knowledge, and teach them to take an active role in their classes and their life.

Dr. Brooks has worked in higher education over 20 years, and has been teaching and developing the system since 1995 when she first taught a course at Dickinson College called “The Liberal Arts in Business.” It was a popular course then, and her courses continue to be popular— ultimately evolving to a new title of “The _________ Major in the Workplace” and currently offered to liberal arts majors at The University of Texas at Austin.

The Wise Wanderings system can be easily taught to your career services professionals, faculty, academic advisors, resident advisors, and other administrators .

To generate enrollment, liberal arts colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to assure parents that their students will obtain good jobs after graduation. Traditionally, the career center has been the focus of this effort, but increasingly institutions of higher education are discovering that career systems must be integrated into the culture of the institution and are involving professors, deans, academic advisors, and others. The Wise Wanderings system appeals to liberal arts professors and administrators because it is a system that respects the education and culture of a liberal arts institution. It will not engender inappropriate or distracting “vocationalism” among students: rather, students will be more attentive and interested in their education because they will see the value of what they are learning.
